This section on EIG is in the process of being written. Currently, what you see is a brainstorm of notes research.
Overview of EIG
This is probably going to be an ongoing project of ours, simply because how secretive EIG are about some of their Brands. Well, by secretive, there is not much concise information out there, and some requests by others have been met with a refusal to divulge the information.
Essentially, the EIG brands fall broadly into 3 categories, vDeck, cPanel and new acquisitions – See http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showpost.php?s=6f152e7150f806278b4d4363a26321a6&p=8783564&postcount=6
Examples of EIG brands based on the Cpanel model, are “Bluehost”, “Justhost” and “Hostmonster”, and those following the vDeck model are “iPage”, “Fatcow”, Ipower etc. As you can imagine, when the brands are all owned by the same company it would make sense to share support services and infrastructure. Indeed, new acquisitions tend to go through a period of adjustment when sites are moved onto their owned servers, rather than rented ones, for example the grumblings surrounding the Hostgator move.
Of course, newer brands such as Hostgator are slowly being integrated by EIG, and as such may blur the lines a little on the traditional model. A Small Orange and its related brands currently are managed independently with their existing teams, but who knows when these might also get integrated into the same support setups etc.
Rather than go into detail on every single brand, we will highlight the associations between the main ones. With the other brands, we will loosely assign them to a category without doing too much investigations. We will highlight those that look tacky, out dated, and are likely just acquisitions that will feed the customers slowly to one of EIG’s other brands.
Whilst not perfect way to do it, one way to classify the different brands is on the basis of support infrastructure, which we will follow up by asking various questions anonomously on their Live chat to ascertain whether the same technitians service all the different brands. Even if they use the same datacenter, the different brands can have different plans, different load tolerances and generally different support priorities. Therefore, just because we group brands together doesn’t mean they are the same unless we specifically state that they are (i.e. we have been able to confirm it directly).
