Google Panda is Not Updated in Realtime Says John Mueller

Google Panda is Not Updated in Realtime

John Mueller at Google has recently revealed that Google Panda is not updated in realtime, following several months of uncertainty surrounding the frequency of the update, as you will see below.

Why all the uncertainty?

Well, Google Panda algorithm has not been updated or refreshed since the 24 October 2014 which makes it extremely frustrating for those webmasters who were caught by the previous update back in October 2014.

For those who don’t know, Google Panda is the Google Algorithm that deals with website quality, so things like duplicate content, thin content and poor quality content etc.  You can see a great cheat sheet to the different Algorithms by Moz here.

But didn’t John Mueller say they were updated regularly?

Actually, yes he did.  John Mueller, all the way back in August 2014 in a Google Webmaster Central Hangout stated that:

I believe Panda is a lot more regular now, so that’s probably happening fairly regularly.

You can see him in the video at this time here:

OK great,… just what we wanted to hear.  But what about since August 2014?  Well, whilst webmasters were fairly quiet, patiently waiting for the next update there has been quite a lot of discussion this year as to when the next Google Panda Update will come.  Then in March 2015, a whole lot of confusion resulted from some comments at SMX West when Google’s Gary Illyes stated that the Google Panda Algorithm is constantly running:

After several retweets, and reports happening in many SEO News Sites of this fact, Eri Wu, also at Google chimed in with this disclaimer:

OK, so where does that leave us?

Basically, confused.  Yep, what does “re-processed” mean?  Does that mean when Google initiates the actual update manually, or when the Urls are recrawled.  Certainly, with the lack of an update in months it has led many to believe that Google Panda is Not Updated in Realtime.

Gary Illyes at Google responded to all the confusion in a response to a Google+ post by Glenn Gabe:

We’re working with +Barry Schwartz to clarify that, Sal. I caused some confusion by saying too much and not saying enough the same time. Stay tuned

Of course, a month goes by, and still no word from Google with clarification on the issue, that is, until yesterday.

John Mueller confirms that Google Panda and Google Penguin are not updating regularly

In a Google Webmaster Central Hangout John Mueller finally confirmed what we all had suspected about Google Panda, but also extended that statement by applying it to the Google Penguin Algorithm too.  Here is what he said:

I think both of those algorithms currently are not updating the data regularly. So that is something for both of them, where we kind of have to push the updates as well.

You can see what he said in the Webmaster Central Hangout below:

So with the Google Panda not updating in 5 – 6 months, surely we are due for an update soon?
