MyHosting.com Shared Hosting Review
MyHosting.com is a subsidiary of SoftCom. The company has its headquarters in Toronto in Canada, and it is a specialist in shared web hosting. MyHosting provides web hosting, email hosting, and VPS solutions, as well as hosted Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft Exchange Servers, DNS, and managed migration services. The company has won many awards and is a trusted Microsoft partner.
The web servers that are provided by MyHosting are housed in two different data centers – the Equinix center in Toronto and the Earthlink center in Rochester, NY. These are both high-end data centers that offer redundant fiber optic networks, the best in both physical security and network security, climate control fire suppression, backup power supplies and constant support and monitoring at any time of the day or night.
MyHosting.com Shared Hosting Plans
MyHosting offers “unlimited hosting” regarding storage space, bandwidth, and websites. However, you should read the fine print about this, and details of the various plans very carefully. There are significant restrictions on the amount of databases that can be used for each plan that would limit the number of dynamic websites you can host (i.e. WordPress). For the basic plan, you are only allowed three databases so that pretty much limits you to 3 sites. We have covered more of the differences and limitations of the various plans in the table below:
|Personal Website||Business Hosting||eCommerce Hosting|
|Dedicated IP +
|Price (first term)||$4.95 pm||$9.95 pm||$18.95 pm|
In addition to the prices above there are some additional add-ons that you may wish to consider:
- GoMobi – $4.95 pm – allows you to create a mobile version of your site easily.
- Online Reputation Monitoring Tool – $1.25 pm – This checks your site against various blacklists. You can see an example below:
- Backup Restore – $1.30 pm – This allows you to restore your website files or database quickly should an emergency arise. We always recommend backing up your site independently rather than relying on your web host. As a result, you may wish to consider VaultPress or Codeguard.
- Website Migration Assistance – It would seem that Myhosting.com do not offer free help transferring your site to them. If you need help, they charge $44.95. While it is not unusual for web hosts to charge for transfer, most will offer to move from a cPanel host for free, or at the very least one website free of charge. We are disappointed that they do not do this.
MyHosting offers both Linux and Windows hosting.
- CentOS Linux
- PHP 5
Looking at their feature list on their website it would seem the exact versions specified are a little out of date. We are presuming they are using cPanel \ WHM, and, therefore, we expect the latest stable versions to be supported. However, it is a little disconcerting that they still advertise as using PHP 5.2.17. You may wish to check on their Live Chat if you need a particular version to be supported.
Also, their Linux plans include an application installer that will install some of the most popular web applications (such as WordPress) with a single click.
The shared platform uses their own control panel, but their VPS plans utilize WHM \ cPanel.
Their Windows hosting only comes in two plans. One based on Shared hosting at $9.95 per month, and the other based on a VPS platform (Hyper-V) at $34.95 per month for the first invoice.
The shared platform uses their custom control panel, but the VPS platform uses Plesk.
Also, their VPS platform appears to be using the more up to date software:
- Shared Windows Hosting – Windows Server 2008, IIS 7, Microsoft SQL 2005
- VPS Hosting – Windows Server 2008, R2 or 2012, ISS 7 or 7, Microsoft SQL 2008 or 2012
It is difficult to know whether this information on their site is up to date, but we are not sure that you would want to use their Shared Windows Hosting with the specifications that are advertised.
MyHosting offer support via Phone, Email, Post (if you don’t mind waiting a week for a reply), and Live chat. We have not explicitly tested their support responses, but there are a few grumblings about slow, non-existing support, but you will probably find the odd complaint about any host.
The fact that there are very few complaints around the web probably indicates that they do not have any significant issues, and we see this as a positive sign. We suggest out the user reviews below for further information.
Interestingly, MyHosting gives a 2-minute Phone response and 1-hour email response guarantee for all support requests. We like this, and faster than many other web hosts.
As with our impressions of their support, they do not appear to have many complaints around the web that indicate they have a particular problem. Of course, there are a few issues, but we did find one review that provided proof of some pretty decent uptime of 151 days:
MyHosting offers a 100% Uptime Guarantee that offers a 1 to 1 credit in the case of disruption. This won’t give you much in the way of compensation and seems to be more of a marketing gimmick than anything else. That being said, most hosting providers don’t provide much in the way of compensation for their Uptime Guarantees. It is always better to go with a host that has a proven track record.
Money Back Guarantee / Cancellation Policy
MyHosting offers a 30-day money back guarantee. This should be entirely adequate to determine whether you like the hosting or not. The money back guarantee does not apply to any extras, such as domain registration fees or other third party costs. Also, if you have ever received a refund in the past from them or have been a customer within the past 90 days, you are not eligible for a refund. These are standard exclusions, but worth pointing out.
We haven’t tested this web host personally, so can only go on what we have read on their website and from our research around the web, so you may want to have this in mind when you view our rankings for this host. Certainly, our experience with this host is fairly limited, and therefore you may wish to consider Siteground, who are currently offering 60% off your first invoice.
That being said, we get the impression you can get more for less elsewhere, especially when you add in all the additional fees for the extras.
We are also not overly keen that they have chosen to use their custom control panel for shared hosting, rather than the cPanel \ Plesk options they offer with their VPS. With their pricing points, we would have thought they would have been willing to provide this.
From what we have seen on the web, they are quite popular due to their hosted Exchange solutions (email, messaging, contacts, calendars), but for the web hosting there are a few mentions of CPU abuse (sluggish response times) and slow support. That being said, the number of complaints are very limited, so we see that as a positive sign.
